My calling for this semester is FHE Co-chair (yes that is a real calling in singles wards) and part of this calling requires that I become active in church. Darn. As a result I am now expected to attend the many activities outside of church that I have never taken the time to attend before. One of these activities was a service project where we went to the Saint Anthony sand dunes and cleaned them up. When I say clean them up I mean pick up the random firecracker, broken root beer bottle, and water-bottles that were sparsely scattered across the dunes. It was pretty funny to see the difference between litter in Idaho and Arizona. If we did this in AZ we would have had bags full of cigarette butts, beer bottles, and nudy-magazines. None of that in Rexburg! But I actually did have a lot of fun despite having to wake up at an un-godly hour. Here are some of the highlights from the activity:
1. While we were waiting to leave a girl pulled into the parking lot and hit a parked car. It was fun to see a girl flip out behind the wheel. Not so fun to hear every guy there talk about how bad girl drivers are.
2. I drove with my cute/adorable/sweet Taiwanese roommate and introduce her to some classic songbirds like Billy Joel, Whitney Houston, Tim McGraw and others. My favorite part of the drive was her belting out Shania tunes.
3. Found lots of broken glass, a buried car seat, a dollar bill, and a dead body. Kidding about the dead body part but at times I did feel like I was in the opening scene of a Bones episode.
4. Jackie and I found walking sticks that helped us find lots of things to do other then looking for trash.
5. When I parked on the side of the road I accidently got my car stuck in the sand. Me, Jackie, and Sandy pushed my car out of the sand without any help! I actually felt really empowered by that. And I was actually surprised that no one offered to help. Guys from our ward walked by and several cars (including one full of Boy Scouts) drove by without even asking for help. I don't want to sound old-fashioned, but men always offer to help when they see me doing something with my car. What's happening to chivalry??!?!!
6. Had tons of fun (like always) with my BFF and roomie Jackie.
